Geography is the dynamic study of the Earth's physical environment and the workings of human society within it. As a student of Geography,
you will try to get to the heart of contemporary issues such as global warming and the environment, world economics and politics, modern
societies and cultures, development and urban planning. You will learn to think critically, analysing why and how trends and patterns of
change emerge in some areas of the globe and not in others. As well as engaging objectively with big issues about our planet and society,
you will gain practical skills in areas such as Geographical Information Systems, Environmental Remote Sensing, statistical analysis,
landscape appreciation, map reading, aerial photography, graphic design, computer applications and report writing. Fieldwork is also
organised in.

Media Studies at NUI Maynooth
The Centre for Media Studies at NUI Maynooth offer programmes that are designed to provide students with practical, hands-on experience
in media production. The courses are taught by industry professionals, combined with all of the benefits of a traditional Arts or Science
degree delivered by a university with globally recognised strengths in key humanities disciplines. Media Studies is one of the departments
within the Faculty of Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy. The Faculty also includes the Departments of Ancient Classics, Celtic Studies,

This is the only degree course in Ireland that combines media production training with the academic strengths of an Arts BA.

Postgraduate Studies in Media Studies
The Centre for Media Studies' new MA in Radio and Television Production is a unique programme designed to prepare you for a career
in radio and television production. You do not need previous training or experience in Media Studies: If you are a graduate – or
are soon to be a graduate – of a humanities or social sciences programme and want to make factual programmes, our one-year, full-time
M.A. in Radio and Television Production offers you the opportunity to acquire the relevant technical and intellectual skills.
The course places its emphasis firmly on practical programme making, with theoretical and research modules that provide a valuable
academic context. Building on your studies in the humanities or social sciences, the degree offers a focused training in factual
programme making designed to produce skilled documentary makers. The M.A. in Radio and Television Production is run in conjunction
with one of Ireland's most respected independent production companies, Kairos Communications Ltd., at whose state-of-the-art studio
you will be taught by professionals working in the industry.

Undergraduate Studies in History
As an undergraduate student of history at NUI Maynooth you will examine human experience over time to understand and explain
the origins and evolution of the societies we live in - the complex processes of social change, the choice of one set of
political or ethical values over another, the context in which radical ideas arose – history is the study of all of these
things and more. Understanding the identity of nations, races or creeds will give insight into the causes of conflict, how
countries were formed and societies evolved, and the way we live today.
The Department of History also provides for international studies and runs a number of undergraduate student exchange programmes
with St Mary's College, Notre Dame (USA), Voronezh State University (Russia), and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, as well as

The Department of History at NUI Maynooth is a centre for historical research of national and international significance. The research
specialisations of department members cover the history of Ireland and major areas of early modern and modern European, North American

Computational Thinking at NUI Maynooth
Computational thinking is about combining human creativity with the
power of computers to solve problems. It involves applying heuristics
to find solutions in the presence of uncertainty, modelling problems
so that they can be most effectively attacked and reformulating
seemingly difficult questions into ones that have already been
answered. Computational Thinking sits within the Faculty of Science
and Engineering. The Faculty is home to cutting edge teaching and
research and can trace its origins back to the nineteenth century and
includes the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science,
Electronic Engineering, Experimental Physics, Mathematics &
Statistics, Mathematical Physics and Psychology.

Undergraduate Studies in Computer Science
Thinking computationally is about exploiting abstraction, identifying patterns and developing innovative strategies to answer
questions that span the spectrum of human activity. The BSc in Computational Thinking provides an accelerated route through
the essentials of theoretical computer science and their mathematical foundations. Further, it explores core themes in philosophy
which ground the field and connect it with the broader agenda of a liberal education that seeks to understand and analyse human
knowledge and thinking.

Postgraduate Studies in Computer Science
Postgraduate studies are a key element in the activities of the Department of Computer Science with over 80 students enrolled for
taught and research degrees from Higher Diploma to PhD level including the newly funded Erasmus Mundus MSc in Dependable Software.
Research postgraduates are provided with individual places in the research laboratories, with dedicated computer equipment as required.
Taught M.Sc. postgraduates have dedicated laboratories for their work. All postgraduates are encouraged to participate in academic events,
such as conferences, and the Department also has links with many research institutes on campus.
